Water Analysis by IEC

Laboratory Testing of Water

Clean, non-contaminated water is essential for both animals and humans. Poor water quality can be a hidden factor in poor performance, particularly affecting young stock due to high bacterial content.

Contamination in water is often undetectable by taste, smell, or colour. Therefore, it is recommended that private well water be tested at least annually.

IEC offers advice on water testing and interpretation of results as part of our comprehensive services.

Taking a Water Sample

The accuracy of the analytical result depends on the quality of the sample collected. Follow these steps to collect a representative sample:

  1. Clean the tap thoroughly, including the inlet, using a flame or disinfectant wipe.
  2. Turn on the tap and let the water run for at least 2 minutes.
  3. Remove the cap from the sterile bottle and immediately fill the container.
  4. Replace the bottle cap as soon as the bottle is full, leaving a small headspace.
  5. Record the site and date of sampling.
  6. Deliver the sample to the IEC as soon as possible.
  7. If storing overnight, maintain the water sample at 1-5°C.

Following these procedures ensures the reliability of the water analysis results.
